Day 52 – Air and Space 2: Udvar Hazy

While at the Air and Space museum gift shop I noticed a book called America’s Hangar. It told the story of the Udvar-Hazy center. It’s a massive hangar outside DC that has the bulk of the Smithsonian aerospace collection, including an SR-71 and the space shuttle Discovery! Wednesday morning I braved DC traffic and visited the center.
The city is unique, in so far as I have never once been able to drive anywhere with out getting lost or having problems navigating its convoluted streets. Even google maps, with directions that had been fine in every other major city, couldn’t get me to a single destination without several mid-trip recalculations. I would literally get lost every single time, even on short trips. I pronounce DC the worst city to drive in (so far).
The day went too fast. My hotel was in Lynchburg, only three hours away. The trip through the Shenandoah Valley took me through many small towns. I would occasionally stop for a drink or gas and several times I overheard conversations that I couldn’t understand at all. The accents were so think I could barely make out an English word here and there.
I had hoped that it would be cooler in the evening, but the sun is still up at 9:00pm, so the whole trip the temperatures ranged through the 90s. My farmers tan has become extreme, looking like I received an arm transplant from George Hamilton.

I’m in north Carolina waiting to meet up with my nephew Philip and his wife Rachel. Just visited Melanie and Barb. Melanie remembered you from our Cantina days, says hi.

Some very beautiful scenery & great pics of the museums. Looks like some of that could be a duplication of several things we have here in the NASA buildings near Clear Lake. Can’t recall if you were with us, or not, when we toured NASA with Sally. Were you, or was that when you toured several museums by yourself?? J&M
