Days 88 and 89 – Santa Fe

I had almost no knowledge of New Mexico so I decided to visit Santa Fe over Albuquerque. Echo had remarked that it didn’t seem like anything special to her, but Santa Fe might appeal to me. Its a surprisingly small city. No tall buildings, lots of tree lined winding streets and everywhere beautiful adobe buildings. I wasn’t prepared for such a singular aesthetic throughout the city. The downtown area reminds me of Carmel; it’s a beautiful, almost theme park like city with a very rich clientele of tourists, mostly older.

There is a beautiful little church off the main plaza downtown. I spent some time there in the sanctuary. I’ve been in lots of churches on this trip, but for some reason this one felt special, sacred even. I was overcome with emotion from the moment I walked through the door. I lit a candle and said a prayer for Sally, as she had done many times for her family members that had passed on.

Santa Fe has the largest concentration of art galleries outside of New York, over 200, half of them on a single street. Some of the galleries had extremely expensive pieces. I chatted with a shuttle bus driver who told me that he once drove a man to a gallery on Canyon who stopped for a few minutes and bought a 1.5 million dollar sculpture. The fellow got right back in stopped at more galleries, working his way down the street. Spending a day walking down Canyon Street, enjoying an iced chai and homemade scone was a highlight of my stay here. I would like to return and see more of the local flavor of the city and spend some more time in norther New Mexico.
