My plans were dashed this morning as a key road was closed due to snow (in June!). Hwy. 25 was my link from the town of cougar to the east side of the two major mountains in Washington. With that avenue closed my only route was to the west, and up I-5. The blessing in disguise was that the west side of Mt. St. Helens is the more interesting one and it’s a closer view too. Also, the road up is another dream motorcycle road, twisty, clean and almost free if traffic at the hour I traveled.

This 15′ tall Bigfoot sculpture is one of the better ones I’ve seen and graces a Bigfoot themed tourist trap on the way to the final visitor center.

The mountain itself is immense and can not be captured in still images. The thought of one third of this giant chunk of earth being blow skyward is mind boggling.

The visitor center had this cool model that lit up to show the different stages of the eruption.

A full five miles away, tree trunks show the awesome might if the explosion. It is estimated that a shockwave traveling 500 miles per hour blew trees apart miles away and sent a cloud of ash 15 miles into the air.

The trip up to Seattle was strictly boilerplate, all freeway. I realized I had become spoiled by thoughtful and conscious Oregon drivers. The Washington variety were much like the California species I was familiar with. Only vaguely aware of the rules and etiquette of the road, bordering on solipsism.
I stopped in Capitol Hill for a great coffee at Victrola and bought some bread and cheese at Melrose Market. My friend and ex-Shaban/FreeRanger offered to put me up for the night and we enjoyed a great dinner, delicious cocktails and good conversation.
