Day 25 – The Black Hills

I got an early start, wasting no time in leaving Deadwood behind. One of the biggest motorcycle rally’s in the country happens each August in Sturgis South Dakota. Even though I’m a few weeks early, I figured I should at least drive through the town. It’s only twenty minutes from Deadwood and sort of on the way.
The town is fairly small, and the main street is really just a collection of souvenir tshirt shops and bars. During the festival, lots of stages and temporary establishments pop up, so there wasn’t much to see. I did check out the motorcycle museum.

There were a few neat old bikes, including a beat up old Vincent Black Shadow. The owner was there and I talk to him a bit. He told me about how 50 years ago in Minnesota he would ride the bike everywhere, even entering it in an enduro race. He also pointed out some less than stock features of the bike, including some hot water heater pipe he used to repair the exhaust system.
(sorry, no pics of the bike, they didn’t turn out). The old indian single they has was quite nice too.
Read more on Sturgis here.

Southward from Sturgis I passed thought the tiny town of Nemo. Really just a few houses, a general store and a lodge.

I stopped for lunch in Rapid City, remarkable for being large enough to have a small downtown area with some cool alleys.

Traveling through the Black Hills I passed through some amazing scenery. The large, jutting rocks have a rounded, organic quality that the formations in Montana and Wyoming didn’t.

Late afternoon I headed for Custer where I was meeting Sue, Tim, Hunter and Madison for a few days camping.

Hmmm–I twice typed in Blog entries, and submitted them, but the system went dead slow, then the messages went away. Will try again.(I did check out our PC as suggested, and apparently it is not in danger of crashing tomorrow).. Anyway, I mentioned that I would have enjoyed visiting Sturgis. And, in my younger days–would have enjoyed climbing Devils Tower. (Not at 73, of course). Will be bowling tournaments next two weekends-here in Houston, as well as one in Beaumont in September. More Love, J&M
