Day 44 – Pittsburgh

I don’t know about the rest of the country, but I’ve never given Pittsburgh a first, never mind a second thought. It’s always been one of the many funny sounding eastern cities that I lumped together. I never even bothered to form a mental picture of it. So of course I had to check it out. It was on my way to Philadelphia. It’s an awesome city. The history, the geography, the crappy neighborhoods : they are all unique and kind if exotic for someone raised in the Midwest. I spent the morning touring the town and when the heat became unbearable I went to the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History. For lunch i stopped in a genuine dive bar that served food. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the cigarette vending machine! I haven’t seen one of those for almost 20 years.
The weather forecast was calling for thunderstorms, and had been warning of them all week. The skies opened as I returned to my extra shabby hotel (Quality Inn must simply be pointing out that the building does have some qualities, none of which were enumerated).

Wow!A city of contrasts..some rather tacky looking industrial neighborhoods, but flower adorned bridges and a quie impressive Carnedgie Museum of Arts & Natural History give it some balance. The pic of that plate of food makes me realize that I probably didn’t miss much in not being with you for that meal… We will be praying for you to get a nice break in the weather, while you progress on to Philadelphis. Will try to call you. J&M

The museum looks wonderful! Thanks for posting such great pictures. I’m glad to see you got a salad after that congealed meal above.

hi Scott. I’ve only been to Pittsburgh once, but i was impressed by it too. I remember some hilly parts of town and also some interesting people there. Nice pictures.
